Supply teaching has many benefits, but holiday pay often isn’t often one of them. However, the school holidays not only offer the opportunity to rest and recuperate but also the chance to gain new experiences while making some extra cash too.
Read on for our top tips on how to earn some extra money, gain experience and have a memorable break during the school holidays.
- Exam marking – This is a great way to make some extra money during the holidays using your teaching qualification. You can do it from your own home, you get paid in a lump sum and it looks great on your CV. GCSE and A Level examiner roles with exam bodies such as Edexcel and AQA are regularly advertised and you can find out the criteria to become a marker for Key stage 2 tests here.
- Childcare – With your experience in dealing with children and accompanying DBS approval, you will be snapped up by childcare providers offering holiday playschemes.
- Holiday clubs and camps – Working at an activity camp on holiday club is a fun way to meet new people and have an adventure. Get outdoors and (hopefully) enjoy the sun at one of the summer camps in your local area or even abroad. YHA (England and Wales) and PGL offer great experiences.
- Private tuition – Teaching doesn’t have to end when the school term does. Many children (well, their parents) want to continue learning over the holidays, especially for those with exams coming up. Either find work through an agency or offer your services privately, it’s a great money maker and can be very rewarding.

- NCS (National Citizen Service) – The summer of 2018 is set to be the biggest yet for NCS with 20,000 seasonal roles available across England and the success of NCS depends heavily on seasonal roles. Opportunities are available at NCS through half-term too and roles include those of mentors, workshop facilitators and support workers. So, if you’re passionate about making a difference and keen to make some extra money, check out seasonal roles at NCS.
- Dog walking / Sitting – The dog is the most popular pet in the UK, and there are plenty of people that don’t get as much time as they’d like to walk them during the school holidays. If you love the outdoors, walking and dogs then this could be the perfect holiday job for you. Either approach dog walking or doggy daycare services in your area or register your services with a national online platform such as Tailster.
- Teach English abroad – A fantastic opportunity to experience a different culture and education system while gaining some great transferable skills. TEFL offers some great short-term positions lasting between 2 – 12 weeks in fantastic European locations.
- Steward at a festival – Do you love festival season? Why not apply to be a steward at a local festival, or even one of the bigger ones and make some cash this summer. You might even get the chance to catch a couple of your favourite bands! While they tend to be volunteer roles, you will get to see some top acts for free particularly at larger festivals. - Residential Schools – What happens in the school holidays at residential schools when the teachers take a holiday and the pupils are not able to leave the facility? They call on supply teachers. This is a great way of developing your teaching experience and working with young people outside mainstream education. Speak to your local PK Education office to find out about these opportunities.
